The Story of Fatima

Between May 13th 1917 and October 13th of the same year Our Blessed Lady appeared six times to Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, three young shepherd children living near the town of Fatima, Portugal. At that time civilization was torn asunder by war and violence.

The 1st World War raged in Europe, introducing mankind to the most savage forms of warfare seen to date. In far off Moscow, Lenin prepared the Revolution that would overturn the Russian social order, eventually engulfing most of Eastern Europe with its bloody reforms.

Portugal was in political chaos. There was a succession of Governments. Following a revolution, the monarchy had been replaced  by a republic with a new constitution separating church form state. Government officials were not sympathetic to the faith. And as a result they engaged in the severe persecution of the church.

It was into this climate that Mary appeared to the three young children. The woman wearing white asked the children to pray for peace by saying the rosary every day.
