Confirmation celebrates the acceptance of the Holy Spirit and normally takes place when the child is in sixth class in primary school. Preparation for the sacrament involves the school, the candidate and their families, the community through preparatory masses and the priest and parish pastoral worker. Sacramental preparation in the school is based around the Alive O Confirmation programme, which is designed to facilitate pupils, parents and families’ active involvement. In particular, the school encourages the students to research and choose a confirmation name that is meaningful to them.
The sponsor has an important role in supporting the candidate in the ceremony itself and in living out their baptismal promises. The person chosen as a sponsor should be at least 16 years old and have already received the Sacraments of baptism, confirmation and holy communion themselves. The Confirmation sponsor may be one of the people who was a sponsor at Baptism, but should not be the mother or father of the person being confirmed.
