Eucharist (Holy Communion)

The sacrament of Holy Communion is one of the sacraments of initiation that usually takes places when a child is in second class in school. Preparation for Holy Communion is a communal effort involving the school, the candidate and their families, the community through preparatory masses and the priest and parish pastoral worker. Sacramental preparation in the school is based around the Alive O First Communion programme, which is designed to facilitate pupils, parents and families’ active involvement.

The ‘Do this in Memory’ programme is also followed which involves participation by the classroom, the home and the parish. The programme begins with an information night for the parents in the church, then an enrolment ceremony for the candidates and their families. A number of ‘Do this in Memory’ masses, along with regular Sunday masses, help prepare children for the sacrament.
